The Time is Now to Invest in Africa and African SMEs, Tony Elumelu Tells Global Investors in Paris

Tony O. Elumelu, Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) and Chairman, United Bank for Africa (UBA) and Heirs Holdings opened the “Ambition Africa” conference organised by the France Invest Africa Club in Paris, France.

As Elumelu delivered the opening address, he urged French investors to look to Africa for long term investment opportunities.

The French Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, as he introduced Tony Elumelu to the audience stated that France could position itself and direct investment towards Africa to end the cycle of poverty and to accelerate development globally. He commended Elumelu’s stance on strengthening the SMEs in Africa to catalyse development. “We share the same ambition in Supporting African SMEs and entrepreneurs as this is essential for the economic development of Africa,” he said, referring to Elumelu’s passion to create wealth on the African continent.

Reiterating the stance to partner with Africa on long-term investments, Mr. Le Maire said “We will ensure that investments in Africa are sustainable, exemplary and environmentally friendly. We want to go fast, go quickly in the race against poverty and renunciation, throughout the continent”.

Tony Elumelu on his part stated “We need to do much better and be much smarter in channelling funds to emerging markets. These markets present huge opportunities – as well as risks for investors, but investors need to fulfil a critical need to catalyse and improve the economy. We salute companies like Total, Bouygues, Accor, Orange, and Bolloré as well as others who have accepted this challenge, but there is room for many more” he said.

Elumelu stressed the importance of private equity inflow into Africa, with a focus on investing in small and medium scale businesses, the lifeblood of the African economy. He stated that Africa has the youngest workforce in the world, with over 60% of its population below the age of 25. This he said was a potential demographic doom that could be turned around to become the continent’s greatest asset if the youths have jobs and economic opportunities.

According to him: “Africans do not need aid. Rather, our young people need investments’.

“Private equity is a force for positive development in Africa. We have a large youth population, who are eager and innovative. They are looking at solutions to problems in their communities but are hampered by the access to capital and investment, mentoring and training. When done right, this kind of investment can bring not just capital but can also strengthen job creation, corporate governance and help improve sustainable business practices”.

He cited the impact and growth rate of the beneficiaries of the Tony Elumelu Foundation as evidence of the potential of SMEs in Africa today. His Foundation has endowed $100 million dollars of his family wealth, to fund over 10000 African entrepreneurs in ten years.

Mr. Elumelu commended The French President, Emmanuel Macron’s initiatives for strengthening the relationship between France and Africa and concluded by inviting investors to consider investing in Africa for the long term.

“The key phrase here is long term investment – no one should come to Africa for short term gain. The time is now to invest in Africa. Private equity has to be part of it. We need it for all,” he concluded.

Tony O. Elumelu Visits Ghana

As conversations continue to ricochet across the African continent about building new, mutually beneficial and effective models of development, Tony O. Elumelu CON, Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, joins Ghanaian President, H.E Nana Akufo Addo and other private and public sector leaders on the Presidential Dialogue themed, Africa’s Money for African Development – A Future Beyond Aid, in Ghana this Thursday, November 7, 2019. The event is jointly organized by the Ghanaian Presidency and UNDP.

Mr. Elumelu will speak on ways to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCTA), and the opportunities emerging from the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He will also evaluate the prospect of increasing regional integration across the continent, as well as the potential of this to grow consumer and business spending while addressing human capital challenges on the continent.

The Inaugural President Dialogue will explore how Africa can optimize the use of its own resources, its creativity and innovation, to effectively self-finance its development and advance climate action, youth empowerment, women, trade and agribusiness, creativity and arts, and technology and innovation.

The event will host over 200 participants comprising of leading actors in business, culture, media, the arts, technology, innovation, traditional leaders as well as youth, women entrepreneurs, traders and environmentalists. It aims to support thought leadership about Africa’s development towards a self-sustaining future, raise visibility and create momentum about our vision for future prosperity, while fostering new partnerships and allies for the continent’s transformation agenda.

Hiring a Digital Marketing Agency vs. DIY

Marketing is essential for the success of every business, big or small. With digital marketing, businesses are able to engage with potentials online and convert them to customers or clients. As a business owner, you have two options when it comes to digital marketing. One, you can do it yourself. Two, you can hire someone to do it for you. So, which one should you choose? This article highlights some key considerations when choosing between digital marketing agencies and DIY.

Expertise

Digital marketing covers so much, including social media, website, SEO, online reviews, content, email and paid advertising. For you to excel in any of these areas, you will require some knowledge and expertise. For every marketing channel you use, you should know the best practices and mistakes to avoid. Knowledge of how to measure the results is also essential. Thus, when it comes to expertise, you can either invest your time in learning or you hire someone who is already an expert. To minimize costs, you can focus on one area you know well or can learn and outsource the rest.

Time

The next consideration is time. How much time do you have in your hands to focus on marketing? Planning and implementing a campaign takes time, so if you are considering DIY, make sure you have some hours to spare each day. Also, when considering time, check how working on the marketing by yourself will affect your key business operations. Cutting down some business hours to focus on marketing may not be a very good idea. When you choose to handle it all, you may end up losing the clients or customers you already have. For instance, if you have a law firm, instead of limiting the number of clients you take each day, you could look into marketing services such as Just Legal Marketing so that you work all day long.

If you are doing DIY, ensure you have a good balance. For those who are busy throughout the day, working with an expert can be the better option. You can hire an agency to focus on your marketing as you deal with your core business.

Money

Finally, take a look at your budget. Start-ups on a tight budget can begin with DIY and hire an expert down the line. However, since expertise affects the outcome of the marketing, you may want to hire an expert for your new business for best results. Furthermore, when you spend money on marketing, you will benefit by gaining more customers and sales.

If you decide to go with a digital marketing agency, do your homework well before hiring. Ensure the company you are choosing has a know-how of your industry. Any agency can handle your marketing, but working with someone who is familiar with your industry is preferable. Next, check the areas of expertise, the costs and your marketing budget. Some agencies will charge you per hour and others per job. Most importantly, go for an agency with a good reputation. Look for online reviews before hiring an agency.

5 Action steps to Break Free from the Habit of Instant Gratification

In my previous article, I shared with you what it means to delay gratification and expounded more on instant gratification and also shared some positives or benefits you’ll get from delaying gratification. Today, let us take a critical look at how you can break free from the habit of instant gratification.

To break free from the habit of instant gratification, it’s imperative that you consciously work through the following five-step process. This process of actionable steps will set you on the right track and help you to develop the habits needed to pursue long-term goals and objectives.

Action step 1: Know What You Want

Your first step is to get a sense of where you’re going. If you don’t understand where you’re going or what you are going to be working towards, then it’s easy to get distracted by the temptations that life throws your way.

Drawing up a plan to attain your

goals and vision will help you to stay focused and disciplined along your journey.

With that in mind, begin by clarifying your vision for the future.

Ask yourself:

•What do I want to achieve?

•How will I achieve this?

•Why do I want this? What are the benefits?

•Why is it important to work towards this vision?

It’s crucial that you also specify your short-term objectives and priorities. This is critical because often instant gratification will squeeze its way into your life when you are indecisive or uncertain about your direction.

During these times, indulging in temptations will seem more enticing and pleasurable.

On the other hand, working through the pain of trying to figure things out will be the last thing you will want to do. This is especially true when you are confronted with unexpected problems.

Action step 2: Identify Potential Obstacles

Along your journey towards fulfilling your long-term vision of the future, you will confront many problems. Some of these problems will, of course, surprise you in unexpected ways. And if you’re not ready to deal with them, then you are likely to succumb to short-term pleasures that bring you momentary periods of comfort. These pleasures will essentially distract you from your problems.

Problems can be quite unpredictable by nature, and you won’t always know what problems might arise. And yet

problems are things you can effectively work through as long as you don’t get caught up indulging in temptations that are likely to distract you. For this very reason, it’s critical that you identify the temptations you might confront along your journey. These are temptations that could sidetrack you when facing adversity.

Ask yourself:

•What temptations could sidetrack me?

•How will I handle these temptations?

At this stage, don’t make the mistake of trying to find solutions to your problems. Your problems are irrelevant. You will most certainly overcome them, as long as you don’t get caught off-guard by the temptations that life throws your way.

I’m, of course, talking about the temptations that will make you forget about your problems. They are the temptations that will bring you instant pleasure and will temporarily eliminate the pain of the problem you face. In the end, it’s not the problem you must worry about, but rather concern yourself with the things that could distract you from solving your problem.

Action step 3: Build a Strong Support Network

To avoid falling into the instant gratification trap, it’s paramount that you build a strong support network. These people will help support you during difficult moments along your journey.

Ask yourself:

•Who could support me along this journey?

•How could they support me?

•What exactly would their role be?

You will unlikely achieve the success you envision without a strong support network.

These are the kinds of people that can help you work through your problems more efficiently. They will be there to help you stay focused. And, more importantly, they will be there to make sure you don’t get sidetracked or distracted by temporary pleasures that life will undoubtedly throw your way.

It’s also important that you clarify what kind of resources you might need on your journey.

Ask yourself:

•What resources might I need?

•How will I acquire these resources?

Your resources might include tools, skills, knowledge, and a plethora of other things that you will need to achieve your desired long-term objectives. It’s very possible that you’ll even need resources that will help you to ward off short-term pleasures and temptations that might suddenly creep up on you during difficult times.

Have a good long hard think about what you might need along your journey to ensure you remain focused on what’s most important at all times.

Action step 4: Set Clear Boundaries

It’s crucial at this stage to set clear boundaries or rules about what you will do and what you will avoid doing at all costs.

Without clear boundaries, it’s easy to fall prey to temptations. However, with clear rules in place — about what you’re allowed and not allowed to do — you will feel more in control of the events and circumstances of your life.

Ask yourself:

•What am I allowed to do?

•What’s absolutely off limits?

Outline what kinds of behaviors you will no longer indulge in. Also, think about the long-term rewards and benefits you will derive from avoiding these potential temptations.

Action step 5: Create a Reward System

Finally, take time to create a reward system that will help keep you motivated long-term. Reward yourself not so much for what you’re doing, but instead, reward yourself for staying away from possible temptations that could distract you.

If for instance, you stay focused on your highest priority activities and don’t get caught up in the habit of instant gratification for an entire week, then reward yourself with some temporary pleasure that will satisfy your senses.

However, once the reward is done, move on and get back on track. Doing things this way will help you stay in control. Yes, you are giving yourself permission to indulge in temporary pleasures and temptations from time-to-time. However, these are not distractions but instead rewards for your efforts.

You are in control of this behavior and, therefore, you are in control of your life. It’s when your behavior controls you, and you end up falling prey to instant gratification, that is when your short-term pleasures begin getting in the way of your long-term objectives.

What it means to Delay Gratification

What it means to Delay Gratification

Today I want to throw more light on a topic I find it vital to our success in life. Since the day I made a decision to study wealthy and successful people so I can learn from and tap from them, one statement they kept telling me whether in books, at seminars or in-person is to delay gratification.

What is delay gratification?
What does it mean to delay gratification?

But before that, let look at gratification or instant gratification.

Instant gratification is a habit where you forgo short-term pain, and instead, indulge in fleeting pleasures that ultimately result in long-term pain. In other words, you find reasons ( excuses ) not to do something because of the pain it creates at the moment even though you know that this action is necessary to help you attain your long-term goals and objectives.

Instant gratification often manifests as procrastination. It’s a form of self-sabotage where you get caught up indulging in the temptations of life at the cost of your long-term goals.

It’s where the pleasures of the moment just seem so much more enticing than the temporary pain you’ll experience while in the pursuit of your goals.

Now to the main topic; What it Means to Delay Gratification

Delayed gratification is a habit where you forgo short-term pleasure (comfort) in order to gain significant long-term pleasure and future rewards. In other words, you ward off short-term temptations that might distract you from your long-term goals and instead focus on what you need to do to achieve your desired long-term outcomes.

This might, of course, result in short-term pain and suffering. However, this pain comes with the realization that it’s only temporary. It’s therefore, necessary as it helps you get to your ultimate destination.

Getting into the habit of delaying gratification gives you more control over your life, decisions, and actions. Furthermore, it helps you value and appreciates hard work and effort. Yes, things are tough right now, but the pain you experience is a necessary part of the process to help you achieve your long-term goals.

The act of delaying gratification helps to strengthen your mind and shape your character. It builds self-control and willpower, reinforces self-discipline, and teaches you about the value of patience. It’s the one habit that determines how successful you will become and how much you will ultimately achieve.

In your financial life, learn to plan for the future. Delaying gratification is one thing that will help you save and invest towards the future. Let your current age take care of your old age. Delay gratification today!

Farmart Ghana launches FarmartZero to help fight Foodwaste

Ghanaian agritech startup Farmart has today launched FarmartZero to help farmers fight food waste to contribute to achieving zero food waste and zero hunger through technology.

One third of global food produced never makes it further than the farm, largely because its appearance does not meet the standards of consumers who reject ugly or imperfect looking produce. However, a quarter of the food lost or wasted each day would be enough to feed the hungry people in the world to achieve zero hunger. Reducing food loss and waste is critical to creating a Zero Hunger world and reaching the world’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 1 (End Poverty),  SDG 2 (End Hunger) and SDG 12 (Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns). FarmartZero helps reduce foodwaste by upselling them to interested charitable organisations, food processors and organic fertiliser companies.

“In our work with helping farmers have access to ready market and reduce post harvest, we realised we often reject some farm produce largely due to their imperfect appearance to meet the freshness standard of our cherished customers. FarmartZero will help farmers sell these ugly or imperfect produce whiles helping consumers save more on food purchased since they are much cheaper compared to the good looking produce” said Farmart founder, Abraham Omani Quaye.

Customers may simply visit the FarmartZero page to send their request for foodwaste. Once the request is received, customers will be contacted to schedule the supply.

How to Keep Your HR Department Running Smoothly

The human resources department can serve as the nucleus of your business.

Yet, as much responsibility will be placed on your HR team every day, you must look for ways to take the pressure off their hardworking shoulders.

After all, they will be responsible for maintaining a positive company culture, protecting your employees’ wellbeing, and growing the business.

While they might have many tasks to juggle, there are various processes and forward-thinking technologies that could support their day-to-day duties.

Read the below helpful advice on how to keep your HR department running smoothly.

Welcome Employee Feedback

As mentioned, the human resources department is responsible for your company culture and employee wellbeing. By welcoming employee feedback, your staff members will have an opportunity to discuss their issues or worries.

By understanding your staff members’ problems or frustrations, the HR team can improve productivity, retain the company’s best employees, and develop a harmonious environment for every member of staff.

So, set-up anonymous feedback forms to allow employees to discuss their concerns without fear of repercussions, and create an open-door policy to allow staff to meet with the HR team at their leisure to discuss an internal conflict or their career goals.

Find the Best Technologies

There are various technology tools that could become your HR team’s best friend. To run a more efficient department, you should invest in a HR and payroll software solution from peoplexcd.com, which will allow your team to store your data and complete processes in one location. It can, therefore, reduce internal errors, simplify complex processes and increase output.

Create an Informative Employee Handbook

To prevent conflict or misunderstandings in the workplace, request your HR team develop an informative employee handbook, which should address the following topics:

  • The company culture
  • Employee etiquette
  • The dress code
  • Attendance policies
  • Expenses procedures

The employee handbook will provide your new and existing staff with a point of reference, which can prevent your HR staff from dealing with endless questions, so they can focus on more pressing tasks. However, ensure your staff know the department’s door is always open if they have any questions or concerns, which can prevent low morale.

Run a Paperless Office

If you have yet to invest in innovative cloud solutions and HR portals, you are making a big mistake. It is likely your HR staff are spending their days rummaging through various filing cabinets and boxes to find the document they need. Plus, they might need to spend a great deal of their time organizing paperwork in your filing cabinets and uploading documents onto a computer.

To take the hassle out your staff members’ working day and improve efficiency, you should develop a paperless office. So, say goodbye to filing cabinets and store all your important documents in the cloud, which can help to safeguard the planet. Don’t forget to create an external backup of all sensitive data to avoid data loss and protect your business from various cybersecurity threats.
