How to Access and Enjoy the New Vodafone 4G Network

Christmas is in early for Vodafone customers since from today, March 19, 2019, onwards, they can also enjoy a high-speed 4G network services from the company. Vodafone Ghana won the license to operate 4G network from the NCA in December last year.

The telecom company then promised to roll out the 4G network in April but last week, the CEO, Yolanda Cuba, announced that the deployment will start today. She said there had been massive support from the technical team so the company was able to fast-track the operations of the 4G services.

Vodafone is now the second telecom company in the country to introduce 4G network to its users, falling after MTN Ghana.

Now, if you are a Vodafone network user, you would want to know how to enjoy the high-speed network too. Well, the CEO also disclosed, last week, that Vodafone Ghana has more than 200 sites, where customers can access the 4G service. And these sites are all spread across the country. So, you may probably be able to access the network from your locality.

With that said, you can also check your phone and SIM card if they have support for the 4G service.

How to check if your SIM card and phone can support Vodafone’s 4G network

To know if your SIM card and phone are eligible to access Vodafone’s 4G network, follow the steps below.

  1. Dial *700# via your Vodafone SIM card and phone you’re checking for.
  2. Select the option 6 (Check 4G status).
  3. Then select the option 1 (Check 4G phone & SIM Readiness).
  4. A prompt will be sent to you giving you information about your SIM card and phone. The message will tell you if you can access the 4G network or not.

On the other hand, you can just dial *700*6*1# to instantly get the information about your SIM card and phone.

If the prompt message says both your phone and SIM card are 4G ready, then you can go ahead and switch to 4G.

You can also get a prompt saying your SIM card is ready but your phone is not. That simply means your phone was not made to support 4G network and there’s nothing you can do about it. You would have to get a new phone that supports the service.

But if the prompt says your phone is good to go but not your SIM card, you are fairly lucky. You just need to go cop a 4G SIM card from any of Vodafone Ghana’s office.

WhatsApp for Android will get Dark Mode soon; available in beta version

Popular messaging app, WhatsApp has been getting a lot of updates and new features these days. From ways to fight fake news to an in-app web browser, and new Status algorithms. The latest feature coming to the Android version of WhatsApp is the dark mode feature. Already, the dark mode feature is available on the beta version of the messaging app.

This was reported by WABetaInfo, a site that mainly reports on the WhatsApp app. According to the site, WhatsApp is bringing the dark mode functionality so that users can read with ease when they are in low-light environments. This is really long overdue. Users have been waiting for this feature since it was first hinted last year.

The dark mode feature is already available on a beta version of WhatsApp for Android. WhatsApp for Android’s beta version 2.19.82 currently has been seen having the feature. Thus, it is not available to the stable version yet. When the company is done with all the feedback from the beta testing, it will then roll it out to all Android users.

From the screenshot images accompanying the report, the Dark mode will affect the whole app, including the Settings menu area. It will affect the sub-settings menu areas too —Account settings, Notification settings, etc.

The dark mode feature will come already set to “disabled” by default. This means you’d have to set it on by yourself.

Note that the dark mode is not black. It is actually a dark grey colour. Also, be aware that it does not support OLED display panels. This implies that there will be a difference in the dark modes in Android and iOS WhatsApp versions.

Totally unrelated, additional features will be coming with the dark mode functionality. The update will show the audio file name when a particular audio file is sent to other users. At the moment, it is not known when WhatsApp will roll out the dark mode feature to all users, both Android and iOS users.

Introducing Uber Lite: Light, Simple & Reliable

uber lite

Uber, today, announced the launch of Uber Lite: The new, lighter way to Uber that works on all android devices.

Lola Kassim, General Manager for Uber in West Africa explains,

“Many citizens within Ghana, actively use Uber to travel for various reasons. With consumers requesting better, lighter versions of their much loved apps, Uber Lite was created. The Uber Lite app is a redesigned Uber app, that uses less space and works better in low connectivity, while still delivering on optimacy when requesting a ride.”

Uber Lite’s new interface was designed to make booking rides quicker and lighter in low connectivity, on basic Android phones, and for people with limited data plans.

Here are the key product features:

  • Light on your phone: Uber Lite is less than 5MB to download (that’s equivalent to just 3 selfies). A smaller app frees up space for actual selfies and other apps. And, with a 300-millisecond response time (literally the blink of the eye), the booking process is fast even in low connectivity.

  • Guided Pickups: Uber Lite guides users through the request experience by detecting their current location, so minimal typing is required. If it can’t detect your location because of GPS or network issues, it guides you to choose popular landmarks nearby like Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, and the Black Star Gate.

  • Tap Over Type: Uber Lite makes picking your destination as easy as a tap of a button. Instead of typing where you are, you can choose a nearby point of interest. Additionally, the app stores the city’s top places so that even when you are offline, no network is needed for them to appear. And the more you use Uber Lite, the smarter the app gets. It learns where you go most often, and surfaces those options first. This feature is particularly convenient for people with phones with smaller screens.

  • Maps On Demand: To keep the app light and fast, maps in Uber Lite are not loaded by default, but are available with a tap when you need them.

Uber Lite retains the core functionality of the rider app, has in-app support, and includes critical safety features such as Trusted Contacts; a feature that allows riders to share their trips with about five friends and family and driver profiles, allowing riders to identify their driver and their vehicles before they get in.

Here’s how it works:

About Uber

Uber’s mission is to help people get a ride at the push of a button – everywhere and for everyone. We started in 2009 to solve a simple problem – how do you get a ride at the touch of a button? Eight years and over five billion trips later, we’ve started tackling an even greater challenge: reducing congestion and pollution in our cities by getting more people into fewer cars.

Uber is available in thirteen cities in Sub-Saharan Africa (Cape Town, Durban, Joburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Nairobi, Mombasa, Lagos, Abuja, Kampala, Accra, Kumasi and Dar es Salaam). Overall, the Uber network is available in over 600 cities in over 75 countries including spanning 6 continents. To request a ride, users must download the free application for Android, iPhone, Blackberry 7, or register for Uber at For questions visit
